About 'The Ramsgate Society'
Ramsgate is an historic town in East Kent, forming a fundamental part of the wider Kent history. Around 47 or so years ago some of Ramsgate's citizens decided to form a society to promote Ramsgate's history and to help the town look to the future. There were changes afoot at that time that would have seen the loss of much of the town's character so there was a clear need for a local civic society, and so The Ramsgate Society was born. The Ramsgate Society does, of course, recognise the past and is justly proud of the many heritage buildings of the Regency, Georgian and Victorian periods - set in the many town squares and crescents. With the Royal Harbour this all goes to make Ramsgate the architectural gem that it is. In support of our heritage The Ramsgate Society also runs a series of Costumed Walks around the town telling of the town's past and its noteworthy residents and visitors - and it has many. Besides the historical aspect The Ramsgate Society participates in planning matters and, in doing so, looks to the future to encourage architectural awareness and sensitive development. All within the extensive Conservation Areas and the wider townscape and outlying villages. Society members keep in touch with activities etc. through our quarterly magazine 'About Ramsgate', to which members are encouraged to contribute. Contributions are received from around the world from people who have a connection with the town and it is out of these contributions that rare items of interest of our past sometimes come. As a member of the national 'Civic Trust' - currently in Administration and being reformed - The Ramsgate Society is proud to be a part of the greater Civic movement. The Ramsgate Society meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from September to May - the Members' annual outing takes place in June. At the monthly meetings we have speakers on a variety of topics. Most recently Thanet's Rock Doc Dr Bruce spoke on 20 May 2009 about our, unique to Thanet, local chalk and shoreline geology along with the wildlife to be found there. On 15 April Robert and Jan Holden gave a slide presentation and talk on the restoration of the historic Gaff Cutter Yacht 'Emanuel', displayed on the heritage pontoons in Ramsgate Harbour, while on 18 February we had a presentation by the Kent County Council Heritage Group on recent Kent history 'discoveries' in the county. |
