Destiny Uncovered
The quite delightful sculpture by Gilbert Bayes of a seated lady, with her eyes closed in memory of The Great War, and said by her sculptor to be looking beyond to a greater vision of the future, has been uncovered. Uncovered that is from all the bushes that in recent years have been allowed to grow and obscure her in Albion Gardens. That same vegetation also obscured much of the Pulham artificial rock, so much a feature of Ramsgate, and especially so on either side of Madeira Walk over which 'Destiny' looks. ![]() Destiny was unveiled by Dame Janet Stancombe-Wills on 17th December 1920. People at the time unkindly said she appeared to be gazing, not at the beauties of the waterfall or garden, but at a tram standard for the overhead tram wires. She can now be clearly seen from Madeira Walk, a particularly fine view being from below the waterfall looking up. |
