RENOVATE RAMSGATE
PROMENADE SHELTER APPEAL (Updated Information) ![]() HERE ARE SOME FACTS. There are nine small shelters from the Paragon to Victoria Parade have been priced at competitive tender for complete renovation of each shelter at £28,000 plus professional fees. The five shelters along Royal Esplanade are much larger structures and the tender price for complete restoration is £40,000 plus professional fees. We have therefore budgeted for £500,700 total cost of the project. The Ramsgate Society has to raise 10%, which equates to approximately £50,000. We cannot do it ourselves - SO WE NEED YOUR HELP. PLEASE GET INVOLVED AND MAKE THIS THE FIRST SUCCESS OF MANY TO COME IN THE FUTURE If you would like to help, to donate or even to sponsor a shelter please contact the Ramsgate Society at or download the pdf from the link above. You can also provide feedback and have your say on the Ramsgate Society FORUM UPDATE ON THE PROJECT. Originally the Society intended to organise a group of volunteers for general repairs and decoration to nine of the smaller shelters from the Paragon to Victoria Parade. After consultation with Thanet District Council a 90% THI grant was offered, if the project was changed to full restoration carried out by professionals. The Society considered this was the best option to provide long-term security for the shelters and as TDC owned the shelters, we required their permission to carry out any works. During negotiations, five larger shelters along Royal Esplanade were included, to take maximum advantage of the grant offer. At a cabinet meeting on 23rd September 2010 councillors agreed to provide Ramsgate Society with a twenty-four year lease on all fourteen shelters. Details of the lease are being finalised at present. Some criticism has been levelled at TDC for not providing funds for the proper maintenance of these shelters but we all know there is always more to do, than the money to do it. It should be noted that Townscape Heritage Initiative is funded equally by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Thanet District Council, so the council is contributing to this work in a big way. ![]() |
