The Ramsgate Society reports that the Ramsgate Coastal Community Team’s Stage 1 Bid for £1.7m from the DCLG Coastal Community Fund has been approve to go through to the next stage of the process.
There were a total of 456 bids from across the country of which only 54 were selected to proceed to Stage 2 so this is a remarkable achievement for Ramsgate.
The Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) initiated Coastal Community Teams to champion coastal regeneration and tackle the economic challenges that coastal towns across Britain face, with the collective aim to bring jobs, growth and prosperity back to our coastal towns. The teams are a way to engage local public, private sector and the community in the regeneration of their towns by developing and delivering solutions by working in partnership.
The Ramsgate Coastal Community Team (CCT) consists of a partnership whose members include Ramsgate Town Council, The Ramsgate Society, Ramsgate Neighbourhood Plan Group, Ramsgate Town Team, Ramsgate Regeneration Alliance and Thanet District Council. They have now been invited to progress the application further and provide a more detailed brief on what they would like to do with the money and how they would achieve it.
The application focuses on supporting sustainable economic growth for Ramsgate by carrying out much needed improvements to the public realm including:
Improving the streetscape of Harbour Street
Improving pedestrian signage around the town
Establishing a Business Hub to provide start-up spaces for small businesses and access to business advice
Restoring the iconic arches and sturgeon lights above the Royal Harbour
Providing additional lighting at Christmas for the harbour yachts
In developing the next stage of the bid the team will be consulting with residents and businesses to gauge their opinions on the plans. Further information can be found at www.ramsgatetown.org
John Walker, Chairman of The Ramsgate Society and member of Ramsgate Coastal Communities Team said.
‘This is a highly competitive process so we’re delighted to be through to the final stage and we hope to build on our earlier success in obtaining £50k Coastal Revival Funding for Ramsgate last year which enabled us to complete the feasibility work for the Stage 1 Bid. One of the big factors that has enable us to succeed is the way that a number of local organisations like the Town Council, Ramsgate Society, Neighbourhood Plan Group, Thanet District Council and others have worked closely together as a team to make this bid work.
In March 2017 The Ramsgate Society are planning to submit a separate £3m+ bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore and refurbish the iconic Clock House and Smeaton Dry Dock in Ramsgate Royal Harbour to provide a modern Museum and Heritage Centre for the town. This will help complete the link between the town centre and the sea front and will act as a catalyst for further regeneration of the local economy.
