This project is being promoted by us - the civic society for the town of Ramsgate.  Founded in 1964, with over 700 members, it is affiliated to Civic Voice the national body for Civic Societies in England and is a registered charity.

The Clock House is the most important historic building in the Ramsgate Royal Harbour. It is Listed Grade 2* by Historic England and houses the Ramsgate Maritime Museum Collection.  Both the building and collection have been neglected for over 30 years, but properly restored and managed could provide a major boost to the economic regeneration of Ramsgate.

The Clock House is owned by Thanet District Council and is currently leased to The Steam Museum Trust until 31st Jan 2037. Under this proposal the existing lease would be assigned to a new trust, The Ramsgate Clock House Heritage Trust, which has been set up by the Ramsgate Society to enable the project to be implemented.

The project consists of five elements:

The repair and complete restoration of The Clock House building

The reorganisation and curation of the Maritime Museum Collection by creating a modern heritage centre and exhibition space within the Clock House to provide a visitor attraction.

The repair and restoration of the Smeaton Dry Dock, the steam tug Cervia and the historic boat The Sundowner as visitor attractions.

Improvements to the Pier Yard car park to make it a more attractive and flexible civic space.

A business plan to secure the long term sustainable financial future for the project.

In February 2016 the Ramsgate Society was awarded a £25,000 grant from the DCLG Coastal Revival Fund to undertake a number of project feasibility studies with a view to a Stage 1 application the Heritage Lottery Fund in August 2017. These studies have now been completed but the project is currently “on hold” at the request of TDC while they commission a further Feasibility Study for their property assets in Ramsgate. This may take up to 12 months. However it is hoped that on completion of their assets Feasibility Study TDC will be in a position to support this project and act as the “accountable body” for the HLDF bid.

The regeneration of The Clock House and Pier Yard will act as springboard for other regeneration initiatives in this part of the town. Pier Yard is located at the centre of the town’s visitor attractions. It lies between the town beach, the Royal Harbour, the Royal Pavilion and is directly opposite the restaurants in Harbour Parade which are an important part of the visitor attraction. Improvements to the Pier Yard car park will restore a sense of civic pride in the town and act as a catalyst for the economic revival of Ramsgate.
