The Speaker at the next members meeting on 21st March will be the architect David Carrington. David is a partner with architects KDPA who were responsible for the renovation of The Royal Victorian Pavilion which together with the Clock House are probably the two most important buildings in Ramsgate Royal Harbour.
Originally built in 1904 as a concert hall and assembly rooms the strikingly elegant Victorian/Edwardian building bears all the classical hallmarks of the ‘Robert Adam Orangery’ on which it was based. It was opened by HRH Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyle. The building was named after her mother, Queen Victoria who had been a frequent visitor to Ramsgate during her early years. Key elements included replacing the signature curved zinc roof and a succession of oval dormer windows that had long since disappeared. Large scale, classical arched windows that had been blocked up were re-opened and re-glazed in their original format reconnecting the interior with the stunning coastal landscape.
For the interior KDPA followed the same design ethos, referencing the few details available to recreate the romantic grandeur of the original, whilst employing subtle contemporary techniques to create a ‘timeless’ elegant look befitting a building of such distinctive character. One of these features included the ground floor bar which from historical photographs KDPA recreated to add to the visual gravitas generated by the exterior. Similarly, a grand staircase utilising original balustrade details sweeps the customer up onto a first floor balcony that surrounds the impressive internal space. Re-forming the gallery was an essential aspect in creating a grand space that respected the original design whilst not forming a slavish pastiche that would have looked out of place in a building for the 21st century.
The Ramsgate Society have nominated The Royal Pavilion for a national award in the Civic Voice Design Awards. The winners are to be announced in June 2018 but this is your chance to hear first hand from the project architect all about this long awaited and hugely important renovation scheme in the heart of Ramsgate Royal Harbour.
