The Blue Plaques Project

The Ramsgate Society
The Ramsgate Society has commissioned around 20 blue plaques to be manufactured and installed, thanks to county councillor Liz Green's community grant. The Ramsgate Society's Frank Batt came up with the idea. He said: "I wanted to update the Ramsgate historical trail and blue plaques seemed like a good idea. The plaques are of benefit to the people in the town because they can see where famous people lived." More...

About
The blue plaques are permanent signs installed in a public place to commemorate a link between that location and a famous person or event, serving as a historical marker.

History
The original blue plaque scheme is the one run by English Heritage in London. The scheme was founded in 1867 by the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), which erected plaques in a variety of shapes and colours. Most RSA plaques were chocolate brown in colour. In 1986, the Blue Plaques Scheme passed to English Heritage
